Desiring God: Becoming a Christian Hedonist
Psalm 37:4
According to Blaise Pascal, “All men seek happiness.” Mankind looks for happiness in different places, but everyone seeks happiness. John Piper’s work, Desiring God is an encouragement to find our happiness in God. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”
In Piper’s book, he recommends that the Westminster Catechism be tweaked by changing one word. The Westminster Catechism reads:
The chief end of man is to glorify God
AND
Enjoy him forever.
By changing one word, we can see the true meaning:
The chief end of man is to glorify God
BY
Enjoying him forever.
God has given us a great gift, life. God is most glorified when we enjoy Him. Piper calls the act of enjoying God, “Christian Hedonism.” It is the principle that we find all our delight, pleasure, and joy in the God who created us. Delight yourself in the Lord this day and forevermore and He will give you the desires of your heart
